A speech-language therapy conversation session

01

Restoring communication.

Speech & Language Therapy (SLP) for Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is a rehabilitation process focused on restoring and improving communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing skills that have been affected by a brain injury. Therapists combine restorative methods with compensatory strategies to help you communicate more effectively and participate in daily life.

What the Therapy Can Address

02

Key components of therapy.

Assessment
A comprehensive assessment using formal tests, interviews, and informal observation to understand daily impact.
Restorative Therapy
Rebuilding lost skills by strengthening speech and swallowing muscles, retraining attention and memory.
Compensatory Therapy
Teaching strategies and tools to manage ongoing challenges — assistive technology, new ways to organize thoughts.
Goal Setting
Therapy plans developed collaboratively, targeting specific, functional, meaningful goals.

03

What the therapy can address.

Aphasia
Difficulties with understanding and producing language.
Dysarthria
Slurred or slow speech due to muscle weakness or poor coordination.
Apraxia of Speech
Difficulty planning and sequencing the movements needed for speech.
Cognitive-Communication
Problems with memory, attention, problem-solving, and executive functions.
Swallowing Difficulties (Dysphagia)
A significant issue after an ABI, addressed through targeted therapy.

04

What is Traumatic Brain Injury?

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an injury to the head caused by a motor vehicle accident or a fall. Adults with a brain injury suffer from communication and cognitive difficulties when language areas of the brain are affected — difficulty finding words, recalling information, formulating sentences, understanding spoken messages, spelling, reading, and writing.

Our SLPs develop a treatment plan after assessment that varies by severity and area of difficulty. Early treatment is mostly structured, but eventually may include community outings to practice skills in everyday situations — and family members are taught how to facilitate interaction with their loved one.
